It was anticipated. Yesterday it happened. "Ian" is retired as a hurricane name by the World Meteorological Organization. Every year the group reviews named storms and those that were particularly deadly and destructive get permanently removed from the list. Names rotate and can repeat in six years. Can you imagine looking up on the television screen and seeing another Hurricane Ian heading our way? No one wants to see or experience that again.
Ian not only decimated parts of Southwest Florida's coastline. It also produced record flooding inland. The storm's ferocity continued up the coast from Florida to the Carolinas, leaving a path of destruction. The nearly category five storm caused more than $112 billion in damages and over 150 deaths, although that number is speculated to be severely under reported.
Florida storms names that are retired
Ian joins the retired names list in Florida that also includes:
- Irma
- Charley
- Andrew
- Donna
96 hurricane names have been retired. Thirteen of those names start with the letter "I." That's far more than any other letter in the alphabet. Next most retired names begin with the letters "C" and "F." There are nine of each letter that are no longer in circulation.
Pictures Of Fort Myers Beach In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Ian
Fort Myers Beach is absolutely destroyed. Our entire Southwest Florida area is reeling from Hurricane Ian. Most of us are without power and internet. We have limited cell and text messaging available. Many of you reading this are from outside of our area, so if can help:
We are currently live and taking phone calls and texts 98.1 FM, 106.3 FM, and 96.1 FM. You can also steam via the B103.9, 96K-Rock, ESPNSWFL, and Sunny1063 apps. To hear the broadcast in Spanish, tune to 99.3 fm or via the Playa99.3 app.
Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, an island off the coast of Fort Myers, just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday. With Ian, came 150 mph winds, the fifth-strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. According to ABC News, "Ian then made a second landfall 90 minutes later, still as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds, just south of Punta Gorda, near Pirate Harbor."
While the efforts to restore Fort Myers Beach will be a years long recovery, our whole area is suffering greatly. The causeway to Sanibel collapsed and the docks sustained heavy damage, making the island only accessible by helicopter. There's some areas where we don't even know yet the extent of the damage.
We will rebuild. But this is going to take a long time.

Pictures Of Sanibel In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Ian
After ripping apart islands such as Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, and Pine Island, Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa. Cayo Costa is an island off the coast of Fort Myers, just after 3 p.m. Ian came in with 150 mph winds, the fifth-strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. Additionally, according to ABC News, “Ian then made a second landfall 90 minutes later, still as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds, just south of Punta Gorda, near Pirate Harbor.”
Florida Department of Transportation did an amazing job getting Pine Island's bridge reconnected. The Sanibel Causeway is a much more difficult task. As you can see, Ian washed away several parts of the span.
That being said, the projection is still to have temporary fixes in place by the end of the month. Around 30 days after Hurricane Ian's landfall. Crews are working 24/7 to make this happen.
What's next for Sanibel?
Currently, Sanibel residents reach the island by boat. There's also supplies delivered by helicopter. There's no power or water service on the island and a curfew remains in place. Sanibel is one of the most beautiful places in Florida. With a lot of work and determination, the island is rebuilding. Miami based Joe Raedle of Getty Images was on the island over the weekend.
