Conference Championship Recap: Eagles crush Niners after Purdy injury;  Mahomes leads the Kansas City Chiefs back to title game.

The Philadelphia Eagles have set a new NFL record for most rush touchdowns in a single season, surpassing the 1924 Frankford Yellow Jackets. They have also become the 5th team in NFL history to rush for 3+ touchdowns in consecutive playoff games in a single postseason.

Jalen Hurts, Miles Sanders and Boston Scott all have 2 TD this postseason. The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to have 3 players rush for multiple TD in a single postseason. Hurts’ Rush TD today gave him 15 for the season including playoffs, the most by a QB in a single season in NFL history.

The San Francisco 49ers struggled with both quarterback play and offensive line performance in the postseason, resulting in a 31% pass block win rate, the 4th-lowest since 2017 and the lowest of any team in the current season.

Starting quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury on the opening drive of the game. Purdy returned to the game after backup Josh Johnson was ruled out with a concussion, but threw just 2 passes (both of which were screens).

The good news for San Francisco is that the team’s core is largely in place for another run next year. However, the big question will be at QB with Jimmy Garoppolo a free agent. Brock Purdy and Trey Lance will still be on rookie deals (combined cap hit of $10.2M).  More on this game later today on Shemon and Sheppard 2-6pm.

Patrick Mahomes appeared hobbled by his ankle injury throughout the game, but scrambled for a key 3rd down conversion on with 17 seconds left. The scramble combined with an unnecessary roughness penalty on Bengals DE Joseph Ossai put the Chiefs in FG range. Per Next Gen Stats, Mahomes reached 18.1 mph on the play, the fastest top speed by a Chiefs ball carrier in the whole game.

Mahomes had another strong performance in the playoffs with 300+ yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions, putting him in 2nd place for career playoff games with these stats, behind only Tom Brady.

The Chiefs’ game-winning drive began with 30 seconds left after they got the ball back from a punt.  Mahomes has 3 career lead-changing drives (tied or took lead) in his playoff career that began in the final minute of regulation. No other QB has more than 1 of those drives.

Harrison Butker successfully kicked a 45-yard field goal in windy conditions with only 3 seconds left, securing a 23 20 victory for the Kansas City Chiefs and sending them to their third Super Bowl appearance in four years.

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow had 270 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, despite being sacked five times. Wide receiver Tee Higgins had 6 catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.
