Mets Player Daniel Vogelbach Gives Back To SWFL Following Hurricane Ian

Bishop Verot graduate and southwest Florida native, Daniel Vogelbach, is giving back to Ft. Myers in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.  He is currently in his eleventh season in the MLB, playing now for the New York Mets.

The name Vogelbach is a familiar name amongst SWFL.  Danny grew up here and he and his family still have strong ties to the area.  His family, including his parents and brother, aunt and uncle and countless friends, have homes in the area.  Vogelbach himself still owns a home here and says he intends to live in Ft. Myers for the rest of his life, according to MLB.com.

“Seeing pictures as the hurricane goes through, your mind goes to places that you probably don’t want it to go to,” Vogelbach said. “But stuff like this just puts life in perspective. This game that we play is obviously very important, and I love it. But there’s a lot more to life than wins and losses. Hearing about and talking to people that literally have worked their whole life for things, and they’re gone, it really does put it into perspective.”

In partnership with Datavault, vogelbachcares.org will be releasing original artwork from Todd Bray, a Fort Myers area resident who donated his artwork for this cause. Daniel Vogelbach and Data Vault Holdings Inc, will be donating 100% of the NFT proceeds to Community Cooperative to help with the rebuilding of Fort Myers, which suffered an estimated $120 Billion in damages.

Pictures Of Sanibel In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Ian

After ripping apart islands such as Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, and Pine Island, Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa. Cayo Costa is an island off the coast of Fort Myers, just after 3 p.m.  Ian came in with 150 mph winds, the fifth-strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. Additionally, according to ABC News, “Ian then made a second landfall 90 minutes later, still as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds, just south of Punta Gorda, near Pirate Harbor.”

Florida Department of Transportation did an amazing job getting Pine Island's bridge reconnected. The Sanibel Causeway is a much more difficult task. As you can see, Ian washed away several parts of the span.

That being said, the projection is still to have temporary fixes in place by the end of the month. Around 30 days after Hurricane Ian's landfall. Crews are working 24/7 to make this happen.

What's next for Sanibel?

Currently, Sanibel residents reach the island by boat. There's also supplies delivered by helicopter. There's no power or water service on the island and a curfew remains in place. Sanibel is one of the most beautiful places in Florida. With a lot of work and determination, the island is rebuilding. Miami based Joe Raedle of Getty Images was on the island over the weekend.
