New York Launches App Identifying Vaccination Status to Allow Entry Into Entertainment Venues

The State of New York has launched a new app that provides electronic proof you've received the COVID-19 vaccine which will be utilized to allow entry into select entertainment venues.

Dubbed Excelsior Pass, the app was first announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo during his 2021 State of the State Address. In addition to being able to hold proof a user has been vaccinated, Excelsior Pass can also hold information via a secure QR code on a user's recent COVID-19 test.

Participation in Excelsior Pass is voluntary. However, a press release from Gov. Cuomo's office states, "As part of initial launch, Excelsior Pass can be used by participating New Yorkers at theatres, major stadiums and arena, wedding receptions, catered events and other events in accordance with New York State Guidelines."

The press release also notes Madison Square Garden and Times Union Center will be using Excelsior Pass, and additional locations will utilize the app once the program expands.

It should be noted that while Excelsior Pass will allow entry into various establishments, people will still need to follow various State and CDC protocols pertaining to face coverings, social distancing and hand hygiene.
