One of the top endemic esports teams in the world, Gen G, continued its forays into collegiate esports. This time partnering with Eastern Michigan University to help both front end and back end support. The partnership is bringing social media campaigns, a Women in Games digital camp and a high school invitational. Gen G has a partnership with only one other college in America, the University of Kentucky. We spoke with Charles Spencer of EMU and Jordan Sherman of Gen G about the fusion.
Why EMU?
When asked about why Gen G chose Eastern Michigan, Sherman had this to say.
[00:02:49] Through our conversations with eastern Michigan, they recognized Esports and gaming as a way for us to take the next level up. And what is a level up mean? For them, it's recruiting new students to the university. You know, people who are smart, people who are based in computers and social media and technology, who are gaming is part of their lives, who are from Michigan. How do we get them to the school and then think about retention? Students are already at school. Maybe someone who wants to be a doctor or wants to be a lawyer who's really juggling a heavy course load. What type of esports and gaming opportunities can we build for those people to help create something where they feel like they have a social network through gaming because they're going to do it anyway?
So can the university become part of that or alumni? People who have graduated recently who are like, man, like my school, I just missed it. Like gaming was this I was a little bit too early. Being in a place where you can actually think as part of homecoming, welcome alumni back to the university and say, hey, we maybe missed it while you were here, but we're gonna take steps now to dull this and you're still part of it.
