With national discourse around race and policing continuing, gaming is also reckoning with social justice. In the past week, many game developers and publishers pledged donations to African-American social groups. But Axis Replay, an Atlanta based gaming venue is taking their commitment to another level. They joined forces with Cxmmunity, Faze Clan, and Beasley Esports to present their "Juneteenth Celebration". The event is a live stream that includes panels, performances, and game tournaments on June 19th.
The Importance of Juneteenth
Juneteenth is an important date for African-Americans. It marks the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation to the final slave state of Texas in 1865. Since then, it's been the source of small celebrations across the country and especially in the American South. In a press release, Axis Replay CEO, Allie Young talked about the importance of Juneteenth.
“Juneteenth is the oldest, nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and a reminder of the pride, resilience and determination of African Americans in American history. Even though COVID-19 has hindered live event celebrations and parades, Axis Replay and our partners are committed to fight for social justice. As an ally, I want to do more, and we do it best by giving our community a way to celebrate and connect, both in-person and virtually. We’re making a difference through our shared love of esports and video games. This is our commitment to the future, and it starts with us. Together we win.”
