Mayor Candidate Says London Could Host 2020 Games If Moved Over Coronavirus Fears
If coronavirus fears cause organizers to consider moving the 2020 Summer Games from Tokyo, London would be ready to pick up the torch.
That’s the word from Shaun Bailey, who is running in the city’s mayoral election. He notes, “We have the infrastructure and the experience, and if I am elected I will make sure London is ready to host the biggest sporting celebration again, if we are called on in an hour of need.”
Baily’s tweeted statement turned into the top-trending topic on Twitter on Wednesday, with several Japanese media outlets carrying the story.
The Tokyo 2020 organizing committee says there are no relocation plans and that they are monitoring the virus, which has killed more than 2,000 people in China and infected over 74,000 globally.
