Daniel Poncedeleon: From Brain Surgery to No-Hit Bid
Sometimes we watch sports looking for a feel-good story line.
Last night the Cardinals’ Daniel Poncedeleon provided such a moment. 14 months ago he was pitching in a Triple-A game when he took a line drive to the head.
He underwent brain surgery shortly after. Enough said about that! Fast forward to last night following his recovery as Poncedeleon made his major league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals and got the start against the Cincinnati Reds.
Not only did he start but he no-hit the Reds through seven innings before leaving the game after throwing 116 pitches. He is just the fifth pitcher since 1961 to take a no-hitter into the seventh inning of his MLB debut.
Sure, we can wonder “what-if’ had he been allowed to stay in the game. However, the fact that he is healthy and throwing in the big leagues is what this night was all about.
